On the 8th of May 2002 the UEFA cup final is organised in the football stadium the “Kuip” (the tub) in Rotterdam. The Dutch football club Feyenoord managed to reach the final and is very excited because the club is based in Rotterdam. The opponent is football club Borussia Dortmund from Germany.
Caused by traditional hatred from the side of the Rotterdam, because of the bombing of the city in the Second World War the final might be occasion for riots.
The state broadcaster WDR produce a 15 minute mini documentary with the titel ‘Zwischen Krieg und Fritten’ (‘Between war and chips’) about the supporters of the two sides. The Dortmund supporters are totally screened off and moved into Rotterdam and the stadium like cattle, while one of the most fanatic Feyenoord supporters Koos prepares for the match of the decade.
In the afternoon before the final Koos visits the city hall where people line up to sign the book of condolence after the killing of Rotterdam politician Pim Fortuyn. After he signed the book he passes the statue The destroyed city from Ossip Zadkine to commemorate the German bombardments in the Second World War.
Before Koos enters the Feyenoord Rotterdam stadium, he visits the amateur complex of Feyenoord and his mobile snack bar just outside the stadium. Here the hard core Feyenoord fans gather and eat snacks before the match. Since the owner of the snack bar cannot see the final, he listens to the live report on the radio, happily jumping around his snack car when it comes out that Feyenoord wins the final.
For this documentary Featurez did the research, set up, planning, accompanied the filming, did interviews and filming of Koos inside the stadium.
