For this episode Who do you think you are? checks out the past of British dood writer and TV cook Nigella Lawson and takes here around Europe to discover her family history and her ancestors.
Nigella visits her grand fathers’ Samuel’s place of birth in Rheinberg and discovered his birth certificate. It revealed the name of his father, Lehmann, along with the fact that he was a professor of languages. Samuel’s wife, Hannah Joseph, was born in Amsterdam and Nigella has a hunch that she was part of an ethnic group of Sephardic Jews who had travelled from Spain and Portugal in the 16th century.
After it becomes clear the a Jewish family relative was living in Amsterdam around 200 years ago, Nigella Lawson travels to Amsterdam for a journey along the Portuguese synagogues, the Amsterdam city archive and the Dutch National Archive in The Hague. She also along makes a tour through the canals in the historic centre of Amsterdam.
