As a measure to fight soft drugs tourism the Dutch government presented a series of proposals aimed at transforming coffeeshops into closed clubs. These clubs should have a maximum amount of members, all of whom have to reside in the Netherlands. To get entrance the members should be provided with a special coffeeshop club pass with client related personal information. In addition coffeeshops will have to be located at a distance of at least 350 meters from a secondary schools and schools providing intermediate vocational education.
The Dutch minister of justice wants to implement the new policy at the end of the year, starting with the coffee shops in the south of the country. For the Swiss public TV reportage program ’10 for 10’ Swiss Europe correspondent Jonas Projer travels to the Netherlands and visits a coffee shop in Maastricht and one in Amsterdam, to speak with the owners and the clients about the new policy. At a later date also the Dutch minister of Justice Ivo Opstelten is interviewed about the new government plans.
