The second episode of the Dutch documentary Legal Weed (in Dutch Legale Wiet) from documentary maker Frans Bromet, transmitted by the Dutch public TV broadcaster KRO/NCRV, is the winner of De Groene Griffel (the Green Stylus) Cannabis Industry Award for the best 2024 media production. In the Legal Weed documentary series Frans Bromet follows several Dutch cannabis growers as first suppliers of legal cannabis in the Netherlands.
Since Frans Bromet is unable to receive the award due to other activities, Sjoerd de Vries is asked to receive the price in his name at the Platform Cannabis Industry congress at the Evoluon in Eindhoven. Sjoerd is the researcher for the Legal Weed documentary series and has also been setting up, planning and accompanying the filming and did the audio.
The jury report the jury states: ‘ln his characteristic style, with dry humour, eye for detail, tenacity and masterful editing, Bromet documents the laborious Dutch cannabis experiment. That fact that Bromet follows the experiment and the Dutch cannabis growers over several years is one of the strongest points of the series. That approach gives depth and therefore more insight than the usually superficial coverage of news journalists on this subject.
All angles are covered, from growers to coffeeshop entrepreneurs and from mayors to Members of Parliament. Bromet mixes all elements and interviews into a captivating whole, which, like the first part, ends on a minor note. The jury of De Groene Griffel sincerely hopes that this fascinating series is not yet over.’
