In January 2001, the Serbian authorities placed Slobodan Milošević under round-the-clock police surveillance in Belgrade, and began investigating allegations that he had misused state funds and abused his office.
When it comes out that Milošević is put in a Serbian prison and that he is charged with misappropriation of state funds and abuse of power, the news program Tagesschau from the German first public TV channel ARD needs a quick interview with the spokesman of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.
At the ICTY Milošević faces 66 counts of crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes committed during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s.
