Europe’s Dark Economy is a short-form three-part documentary series for Euronews exploring the scale and impact of illicit trade, and what allows it to thrive.
Filmed across Europe, the series will combine real-world access and expert insight to reveal how illegal goods move through legitimate supply chains, and the impact this has on public health, the environment and government revenues.
By following the work of law enforcement agencies, investigators and specialists, and speaking to those directly affected, Europe’s Dark Economy will paint a clear picture of how illicit trade operates – often through organised crime groups – and the societal and policy challenges it creates.
One of the episodes focuses on the trade in counterfeit medicines in the Netherlands and the ways in which the authorities are combating these illegal activities. For this episode, interviews were conducted with specialists at Europol, the Netherlands Forensic Institute, the knowledge centre for mental health, alcohol, tobacco and drug and medicines use Trimbos Institute and with former healthcare inspector and lawyer Hanneke Later-Nijland.
