Amsterdam’s historic city centre and red-light district is a major tourist attraction, but some residents say overcrowding and badly-behaved visitors are making the city unbearable to live in.
Tourists numbers are set to soar to around 30 million in the next decade and with fears about the impact of over-tourism, Amsterdam’s new mayor has come up with a number of radical solutions to ease overcrowding – including shutting down the red light district altogether.
For the ITV current affairs program On Assignment Richard Pallot travels to Amsterdam to investigate how party-tourism is making the city unbearable for many of the locals. The red light district is often overwhelmed by huge crowds and the authorities now issue on the spot fines to drunken and stoned visitors that litter the streets at night.
Richard interviews a police officer that works in the Red Ligth District, goes on petrol with two enforcers from the Amsterdam municipality, portrays and interviews a sex worker, follows special hosts and crowd managers and makes a stroll through the district with an activist local.
On Assignment is an ITV current affairs programme, fronted by ITV News international affairs editor, Rageh Omaar. Nina Hossain has presented the programme in Rageh’s absence. The programme first aired on 19 March 2014, following ITV News at Ten.
