National elections: tension in Dutch society

After the government with the populist party List Pim Fortuyn resigned, the Dutch are organising the second national elections within a year. After the rise and fall of the new politician Pim Fortuyn the Dutch are openly discussing the sensitive issues in their society.

Preceding the elections reporter Christina Kronaus travels to the Netherlands to make a background reportage and analyses about Dutch politics and the economy and a local example of how one can fight the tensions in society for the program Weltjournal from the Austrian public broadcaster ORF.

Members of parliament form the Dutch labour party are campaigning handing out leaflets in the city Ede and visit a centre helping drug addicts, a school and a Dutch Turkish organisation and in Amsterdam Dutch journalist, columnist, essayist, novelist and writer Henk Hofland gives his views about the actual political situation in the Netherlands.

Ex-local politician Hans Elemans from the Rotterdam neighbourhood Hoogvliet, located in the middle of the harbour, shows what went wrong and what answers they found to fight the problems. Care, attention and the physical change of environment are key themes for the politician. In the local boxing school youngster get box training. Through this they get extra attention, they develop social skills and they get education.

For this production Featurez gave advice, did the research, set-up and planning of the filming, booked a camera crew, accompanied the filming, did some of the interviews and translations.
