The Byrne identity

BBC presenter Brandon Holland suffers from gigantism, a condition characterized by excessive growth and height significantly above average, and he wants to find out more about it.

On the west coast of Ireland a skeleton is found of a giant and genetic research will show how close he is related to Brendon.

Charles Byrne (probable real name: Charles O’Brien) or “The Irish Giant”, was a man regarded as a curiosity or freak in London in the 1780s for his large stature.

For this documentary the BBC NI crew also travels to Finland and the Netherlands. In the city of Haarlem the body of famous giant Daniel Cajanus was buried in the large Sint Bavo church.

Cajanus was born in Finland and travelled Europe in the 18th Century to visit courts, but also to make money as an object of interest.

Dutch opera singers Michael Poels and Petra Ehrismann produced an opera about Cajanus. It was performed in the Sint Bavo church.

For the filming in the Netherlands for this documentary, Featurez gave advice, did the research, set up and planning, booked a rental car, did the driving and accompanied the filming.
