The Marengo trial, also known as the Marengo case (Dutch: Marengo-proces), is a legal proceeding involving alleged high-ranking members of the Mocro Maffia, a Dutch-Moroccan criminal organisation. The trial centers on seventeen defendants accused of participating in numerous murders and attempted murders.
The Marengo trial is the largest criminal trial in the Netherlands to date. It the focus is on mafia groups that handle drug transactions, torture and murder. One lawyer says they have long since penetrated the infrastructure of the commercial ports.
The special high-security court is located in a commercial district in the east of Amsterdam. Defence lawyers, prosecutors and judges have to do their job under police protection. Some of them work anonymously because they receive death threats.
Ridouan T. is the centre of attention: the police offered 100,000 euros for tips about him. Until his arrest in Dubai, T. was one of the most wanted people in Europe. With him, 16 people are on trial. The prosecution calls the defendants a “well-oiled killing machine”.
