From restrictions on Airbnb and listings to outright bans on certain activities, Amsterdam is having to adapt in order to deal with mass tourism. According to current estimates, Amsterdam attracts over 15 million visitors per year. This massive influx of tourists impacts daily life in Amsterdam in many ways, often to the chagrin of its residents. Due to concerns that the city has become inhospitable to locals, its municipal government has devised several schemes in recent years to address pertinent issues related to mass tourism.
Yasuko Takeda, the Europe correspondent from the Japanese public TV broadcaster NHK visits Amsterdam and Venice to report on the effects of mass tourism and what can be done to fight it. She accompanies two members of the red light district guards, an organisation setup by locals to check and correct bad behaviour of tourists and interviews a a member of the Amtserdam municipal council, a manager of coffeeshop The Bulldog and many tourists.
