NETHERLANDS ASKED TO HOST AFGHANISTAN CONFERENCE
The Netherlands has been asked to host an international conference on Afghanistan at the end of this month. Foreign Minister Maxine Verhagen, speaking at the NATO summit in Brussels today, has said he will respond to the request as quickly as possible. While Moscow dominated the political agenda at the summit, United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made Afghanistan a top priority topic.
The Afghanistan conference would be coordinated by the United Nations and attended not only by NATO countries, but also by Afghanistan's neighbouring states and partners like Australia and Singapore. The US hopes to secure more military support for its military effort in Afghanistan, either in the form of sending troops or training military and police personnel. (radionetherlands.nl)
