After the notorious criminal Willem H. ended up in hospital for a heart operation postponing his trial for many weeks, the Dutch Public Prosecutor suffered a serious defeat in the second civil Hells Angels trial. Although the Hells Angels in Amsterdam were happy with the outcome of the trial, there should not be too much reason for festivities. Against the Amsterdam Hells Angels and some of its individual members a criminal trial is still pending. more

SEGREGATION ON DUTCH SCHOOLS
A Dutch research institute for Multi cultural development, concludes that the Dutch schools get more segregated. While practically all parties agree that a cultural mix is better for pupils and schools, there is no improvement at all. Many parents still think that only a ‘white’ school is good enough, on the other hands some Dutch cities do not see the so-called ‘black’ schools as a problem. The past year there were around forty initiatives of parents that decided to send their child to a ‘black’ school to make the school population whiter, and to let their kids be educated in a true multicultural atmosphere. more

Last Wednesday a majority of the Dutch Lower House made clear that the Dutch Minister of Health has to make an exception for coffee shops, in his fight for a total ban on smoking. That would mean the end to the famous liberal soft drugs policy of The Netherlands. more

FRONT RUNNING DUTCH ECONOMY CAUSES RECRUITMENT PROBLEMS
While the Dutch economy was one of the last comers in Europe over the last years, it suddenly became the front runner with a growth of 2,9% in 2006. The growth and profits stimulate the labour market, with a record breaking 219 thousand jobs last September. But unorthodox recruitment is very necessary because the labour shortage is increasing seriously. more

'MAFIA LAWYER' STOPS DEFENDING HOLLEEDER
Yesterday Bram Moszkowicz, the lawyer of one of the most notorious Dutch criminals Willem Holleeder, gave a press conference stating that he has to stop defending the Dutch top-criminal. According to Moszkowicz his resignation is caused by a conspiracy of the justice department, the media and the heirs of the liquidated late real estate trader Willem Endstra.  He doubts that Willem Holleeder will get an honest trial. Moszkowicz will hand over the case to a colleague, which means that the process will probably start on the 2nd of April. more

THE SHARED SPACE CONCEPT
Thanks to a new concept called ‘Shared Space’, tested in a small town in The Netherlands, most of the traffic signs and -lights disappeared and the number of accidents decreased seriously. The philosophy is simple: in a street where cars and pedestrians are equal, and where the rules and boundaries are not distinct, people pay attention to each other. A specialist: 'This is social space, so when Grandma is coming, you stop, because that's what normal human beings do'. It seems that the concept is also implementable in other sectors of society. more

HARSH CONDEMNATION DUTCH EXPULSION POLICY ASYLUM SEEKERS
The European court for the human rights gave a verdict last week that will probably have large consequences for the future expulsion of undesirable aliens from The Netherlands. PROFIT AND HUMAN RIGHTS, A PERFECT MARRIAGE?
Human rights are to take centre stage in Dutch foreign policy, according to Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen. But while Verhagen was presenting his first major policy strategy as minister, Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende was in Moscow to sign a trade agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a man not known for his respect for human rights. This coincidence underlines the limitations of minister Verhagen's new policy. Whenever trade interests are at stake, human rights will take a back seat. more

After writing a book about his forgery he now opened a gallery in the middle of Amsterdam's art district.

Matthijs van Boxsel's life changed when, in 1980, he read Robert Musil's essay "On Stupidity" and then went on to discover that many other great minds, theologians and logicians had studied the subject of stupidity. His next biggest surprise was to discover that stupidity is not the opposite of intelligence, but an independent quality of its own, the driving force behind civilization, in fact. more

An epic landscape experiment is underway in the Netherlands. Its aim is to make Holland, the most developed of all European countries, wild again. Its method is to establish a vast network of natural habitats and wildlife corridors. Frans Vera, one of the ecologists driving the project, imagines it as a 'green circulation system' that will allow the freer movement of non-human species around north west Europe. Plans for the project show a mesh of green arteries, veins and capillaries, covering much of Holland and infiltrating Germany and Belgium. more

NEW FACTS PROSTITUTION BRANCH SHOCK POLITICS
Dutch politics is shocked about the status of the Dutch prostitution branch after an article was recently published in a Dutch newspaper. Police states that around three-quarter of the window prostitutes do not work out of free will, but are exploited. While the practice of prostitution was legalised nationally in October 2000, Amsterdam has long had a tolerant attitude towards the sector that has been coupled with clear regulations that have been in force for a while. INCREASE DUTCH TRAFFIC JAMS TERRIFYING
Compared with last year, the Dutch so-called ‘traffic jam pressure’ has increased no less than 20% in the first quarter of this year. That makes this quarter the busiest quarter ever. The Dutch traffic information service concludes that the rise in the number of traffic jams is very alarming. The growth of traffic is so extreme that the Dutch will have to expect that they have to stand still a lot more and a lot longer than they already do. more

This is stated by the German historian Monika Tatzkow that wrote ‘Nazi Looted Art, a handbook for worldwide art restitution’. THE DESTRUCTION OF THE DUTCH LANDSCAPE
An increasing number of Dutch are furious about what they call the ‘destruction of the Dutch landscape’. The main philosophy behind the actual environmental planning policy of the last five years is ‘to make optimal use the available space to strengthen the competitiveness of The Netherlands’. According to many this is the reason why there are no hindrances to stop the destruction of the Dutch landscape. And to them this process is taking place in a very fast tempo. A famous landscape architect: ‘I am really panicking.’ more

DUTCH CHILDREN HAPPIEST
A Unicef report have rated Dutch children the most fortunate children in Europe. The Netherlands has come top of a league table for child well-being across 21 industrialised countries. more

Polder windmill

2007, DUTCH YEAR OF THE WINDMILLS
Windmills play(ed) an important role in the Dutch culture, economy and forming of the landscape. The windmills pumped out the water of the new polders (reclaimed land), and the Dutch ‘Golden Age’ would have been very different without the windmill. With 1200 windmills The Netherlands is a true windmill nation. There are also problems. Through a backlog in maintenance and decreasing subsidies there is a large chance that the number of windmills will drop dramatically. An other problem is the difficulty to find new generations of millers. Six hundred years ago the first Dutch polder-windmill was constructed. more

EXPULSION STOP LONG TERM ASYLUM SEEKERS
After the national elections in November last year, the first thing the tiny left wing majority of the new Dutch Lower House did was to force the government to stop the expulsion of long term asylum seekers. Since both the social democrat party PvdA and the smaller Christian party Christen Unie made a large general pardon for long term asylum seekers to the main issue in the campaign, it is practically sure that it will happen. For the long term asylum seeker families life got even more uncertain. It will still take quite some time until they will know who can stay and who can’t. more
